What is It?
AdBlue is pure Urea in demineralised water. It’s a non-hazardous solution and is stored in it’s own tank on the vehicle chassis.
All new vehicles over 3.5 tonne distributed in Europe are required to be manufactured with one of the following technologies:
- Selective Catalytic Reduction (AdBlue system).
- Exhaust Gas Recirculation.
- Diesel Particulate Filter.
What Does It Do?
By ‘injecting’ AdBlue into the vehicle’s hot exhaust gas you’re reducing Nitrous Oxides (NOx) emissions. SCR happens as the Urea in AdBlue reacts with the Nitrous Oxides, leaving Nitrogen, Water and Carbon Dioxide as the end produce. The chart below puts this into context:
Why Do New Vehicles Need AdBlue?
It all comes down to protecting the environment. Vehicles alone are the single biggest contributor to the green house effect. Cutting down CO2 emissions has become a major focus in an attempt to save the environment from further damage so our Government, along with the european board have stepped in to make this happen. This requirement is called Euro 6.
A full 75 litre tank of AdBlue will last the average two axle tractor from London to Istanbul and back!
The Diesel to AdBlue Ratio:
A typical 18 tonne lorry would use AdBlue at a 3-5% ratio. This means that for every 100 litres of Diesel you’d only use 3 to 5 litres in AdBlue. This is due to the fact that AdBlue is used ‘post engine combustion’, so doesn’t actually come into play until the diesel has been used by the engine.
